BRISTOL, R.I. – An inning after taking a 5-3 lead, the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team broke the game open by putting up 11 runs, including six coming on a pair of home runs, as the Leopards defeated Roger Williams, 16-3, in a second round game of the 2008 The Commonwealth Coast Conference Baseball Tournament.
The host Hawks, the tournament’s top seed, tallied two unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead. Junior Bill Lambert (Hanover, Mass.) drew a one-out walk and moved up 90 feet on a single by classmate Jamie Dahill (South Boston, Mass.). On a double-steal attempt, Lambert was thrown out at third, with Dahill swiping second. Junior Kevin Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) struck out, but reached first on a passed ball, which moved Dahill to third. A throwing error on the play scored Dahill and placed Simpson in scoring position, where, two batters later, freshman Zach Porter (Middleboro, Mass.) drove him in with a double.
Fourth-seeded Wentworth sliced the lead in half in the top of the second as sophomore Anthony Carbone (Goshen, Conn.) led off with a single and moved to second when freshman Ben Danker (Branford, Conn.) walked. A double play erased Carbone, but would put Danker on second where he would come around to score on a single by sophomore Chris Carbone (Goshen, Conn.).
Over the next three and a half innings the score would remain 2-1 in favor of the Hawks before the Leopards took their first lead of the day in the top of the sixth. Junior Nick Cunningham (Pembroke, Mass.) drew a one-out walk, followed by an Anthony Carbone single. Danker reached on a fielder’s choice that saw Anthony Carbone out on the force play and Cunningham move to third. Sophomore Doug Papuga (Branford, Conn.) tied the game when his single through the left side brought in Cunningham and Chris Carbone gave Wentworth a 3-2 lead with an RBI single to right center. Senior Jarrett Ament (Boylston, Mass.) walked to load the bases, but the Leopards would leave the bases loaded.
The lead would be short-lived, however, as Dahill hit a 3-2 pitch over the fence in right center for his third home run of the season that tied the game at 3-all.
Wentworth took the lead for good in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs. Sophomore Pete Oggeri (Sandy Hook, Conn.) led off with a walk and was placed into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by junior Mike Roberts (Chelmsford, Mass.). Cunningham was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second and Anthony Carbone delivered a one-out single to center that drove in Oggeri. Both Cunningham and Anthony Carbone would move up a base on an errant throw home, which set up a sacrifice fly from Danker that would score Cunningham and give Wentworth a 5-3 lead.
A five-pitch inning by Leopard freshman starter Matt Jordan (Northfield, N.H.) held the lead at 5-3 and set up Wentworth’s 11-run eighth. The Leopards would bring 15 batters to the plate in the inning, getting seven hits and taking advantage of four Hawk miscues. Freshman Jake McManus (Hopkinton, N.H.) began things for Wentworth with an RBI single. Three batters later, Cunningham cleared the bases with a grand slam to make it a 10-3 game. Following up Cunningham’s effort were Chris Carbone and McManus. Chris Carbone delivered a two-run single, while McManus reached on an error that allowed two runs to score. Oggeri capped off the inning with a two-run homer to right, his fourth of the season.
Jordan improved to 5-2 on the season, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits, while walking two and striking out a career-high 10 over seven innings. Junior Matt Chymbor (Meriden, Conn.) and sophomore Matt Vezina (Uxbridge, Mass.) pitched perfect eighth and ninth innings, respectively. At the plate, the Carbone twins each had three hits with Chris driving in four runs. Oggeri was 2-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Cunningham scored three runs and drove in four.
Junior Sean Donovan (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) fell to 1-2 on the season, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits in 1.2 innings of work. He came on to replace sophomore Dan Roberge (Oakdale, Conn.) in the sixth inning. Roberge, who threw a perfect game against the Leopards on March 30, allowed three runs on six hits, walked four, and struck out two in 5.2 innings of work. Sophomore Greg Souza (Billerica, Mass.) allowed four runs on two hits without retiring a batter, while freshman John Bobrowiecki (Farmingdale, Maine) allowed four runs on two hits and struck out three over the final 1.2 innings. Offensively, Dahill had three of the Hawks’ five hits, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
The win improves Wentworth to 29-11 and advances to the finals of its bracket on Saturday. The Leopards will either head back to Roger Williams (30-11) or will host eighth-seeded Gordon, which eliminated fifth-seeded Endicott, 7-2. The Hawks and Fighting Scots will battle in an elimination game tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. The winner of that game would need to defeat Wentworth two times on Saturday to advance to Sunday’s championship game.
