WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Nick Cunningham (Pembroke, Mass.) was 1-for-4 with two RBI, while three Wentworth pitchers combined to allow one run on six hits and seven strikeouts as the Leopard baseball team opened the Northern portion of their schedule with a 3-1 win at Clark.
The hosts had a chance to strike first, but would leave a runner 90 feet from scoring the game’s first run in the opening inning. Senior Matthew Adams (Jackson Heights, N.Y.) led off with a double to center field and was moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Scott Hollingsworth (Tilton, N.H.). However, Wentworth sophomore starter Chris Sandini (Upton, Mass.) got out of the early jam with a strikeout and a popup.
Wentworth broke the tie in the visitor’s half of the second inning, thanks in part to a pair of Cougar errors. Sophomore Anthony Carbone (Goshen, Conn.) led off by reaching on an error before moving to second when his twin brother, Chris, walked. Classmate Doug Papuga (Branford, Conn.) would reach on the second error of the inning and move to second, which scored Anthony Carbone and moved Chris Carbone to third. However, Clark was able to limit the Leopards to just the one run, with a flyout double play and a ground out.
Clark started a two-out rally in the third inning, as Hollingsworth singled to left and moved into scoring position when senior Joseph Silva (Westbury, N.Y.) walked. However, Sandini induced a flyout to end the inning. One frame later, the Cougars got a leadoff double from sophomore Matthew Tillo (Osterville, Mass.), and with two outs, stole third. Sandini struck out the next batter to end the threat.
The fifth inning saw the Leopards increase their lead to 3-0 as freshman Jake McManus (Hopkinton, N.H.) drew a one-out walk and moved to second when sophomore Pete Oggeri (Sandy Hook, Conn.) was hit by a pitch. Both moved up 90 feet on a freshman Ben Danker (Branford, Conn.) groundout to the right side and would score when Cunningham laced a single to right. Cunningham would wind up on third after an errant pickoff attempt before Anthony Carbone walked and stole second. The Leopards would strand both runners in scoring position when a flyout ended the inning.
Clark scored its lone run of the game in the sixth inning when sophomore Phillip DiMarco (Bellingham, Mass.) led off the inning with a pinch-hit triple to right field off of junior Matt Chymbor (Meriden, Conn.), who had relieved Sandini to start the fifth. Tillo drove him in with a single to left to cut the lead to 3-1, but after Tillo was thrown out trying to steal second, Chymbor got a pair of groundouts to end the inning, helping his own cause with a fine defensive play to end the inning.
Sandini picked up his third no decision in as many starts, but lowered his ERA to 1.65 after pitching four innings of three-hit, two-walk ball in which he struck out four. Chymbor picked up his third win (3-1)—all in relief—pitch allowing one run on three hits in two innings. Freshman Matt Jordan (Northfield, N.H.)) notched his first collegiate save, needing 29 pitches (22 strikes) to retire all nine batters he faced. Oggeri, Cunningham, junior Phil Costello (Medford, Mass.), and sophomore Matt Dannenhoffer (Bethany, Conn.) recorded Wentwoths hits.
Clark senior Miles Whitlock (Augusta, Maine) allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits, while walking seven and striking out five in 6.1 innings of work to be tagged with the loss (1-2). Senior Daniel Simokonis (Worcester, Mass.) walked one and struck out one in 1.2 innings, while junior David Gagnon (Harwich, Mass.) allowed one hit and struck out a batter in the ninth. At the plate, Hollingsworth and Tillo each had a pair of hits.
With the win Wentworth improves to 8-3 and opens play in The Commonwealth Coast Conference on Monday with a doubleheader against New England College at Northeastern University. Clark falls to 6-6 and is at Salem State for a twinbill on Saturday.
