Hurricane Katrina: Wentworth Offering Help to Displaced Students and Alumni

The devastating losses of Hurricane Katrina have had far reaching effects on the Gulf Coast, and, less directly, on the entire nation.  Wentworth believes that it is important to do what we can to aid the many lives affected by Hurricane Katrina, including both displaced college students and Wentworth’s alumni and friends who have made their homes in the storm-ravaged area.

Displaced students welcomed.

Wentworth offered displaced students the opportunity to live and study at Wentworth this fall.  Any student who would have been attending a similar academic program in the Gulf Coast area was welcomed to attend Wentworth.  These students were invited to attend free of tuition, room or board payments for the semester.

Wentworth offers four-year baccalaureate programs in the fields of architecture; civil or construction engineering; computer science and systems; design and facilities; or electromechanical engineering, electronics, or mechanical engineering.

Any interested students were urged to apply before Monday, September 12th (to accommodate the last day to add a course - the 14th) and contact Keiko Broomhead, dean of student services, at either (617) 989-4034 or at her email address, broomheadk@wit.edu

Wentworth Alumni and Friends: opportunities to help.

The concerns of the Wentworth community are also focused on the 93 alumni who reside in the Gulf Coast.  It would be greatly appreciated that anyone with information concerning the whereabouts or condition of these alumni to contact Barbara Such, director of alumni relations, at (617) 989-4156 or at her email address, suchb@wit.edu.

As the time to assess the vitality and safety of bridges, buildings, and other public structures nears, the need will be great for those possessing the skills necessary for that work.  The Wentworth alumni relations program, in conjunction with other academic departments, will sustain a list of those wishing to volunteer their time and expertise to any local, state or federal officials.  Any volunteers will be recommended to agencies to help in the reconstruction of affected areas.

With the tragedies still unfolding and as the long term effects of Katrina become clear, it is important to remain determined in offering our support and assistance to those affected by Katrina.  As an educational community, we are doing everything we can to help our fellow citizens and immediate members of the Wentworth community.
