Wentworth Awards Four Scholarships to MATHCOUNTS Winners
 
Hosts 25th Annual Competition
 

Boston, MA – March 24, 2008 – Wentworth Institute of Technology hosted the 25th Annual State MATHCOUNTS Competition, marking the twelfth consecutive year that the Institute has hosted the competition. For the fourth year, Wentworth awarded full, four-year tuition scholarships to the top four winners of the competition which showcased the math talents and skills of over 160 students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.

MATHCOUNTS is a national math competition that promotes math achievement with all the challenge of a sports event. Students compete individually and as team members in written and oral matches in the subjects of algebra, probability, statistics and geometry. The competition was followed by a countdown round where two students went one-on-one to answer questions as quickly as possible.

This year’s four top winning students who will represent Massachusetts at the National Competition in Denver, Colorado are: Xiaoyu He, R.J. Grey Middle School, Acton (1st place); Jason Li, Jonas Clarke Middle School, Lexington (2nd place); Yongyi Chen, John Glenn Middle School, Bedford (3rd place); and Allison Bukys, Jonas Clarke Middle School, Lexington (4th place). The winning school in the team competition was Jonas Clarke Middle School, Lexington.

Volunteers from the Massachusetts Society of Professional Engineers, Raytheon, a Military/Technical organization, and Wentworth personnel contributed to the success of the event.

The State MATHCOUNTS competitions, sponsored by the Massachusetts Society of Professional Engineers (MSPE), are held in 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories, and are the culmination of individual chapter competitions for over 125,000 6th -8th grade students representing more than 6,000 schools. MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide program designed to increase enthusiasm for, and advancement in, middle school mathematics at a crucial stage for developing and sustaining interest and ability in math.
