Construction Management Students Earn 2nd Place at National Construction Management Commercial Building Competition

Boston, MA – March 17, 2008 – Wentworth Institute of Technology announces six students from the construction management program recently finished in second place at the 2007 Associated Schools of Construction (ASC)/Associated General Contractors (AGC) National Student Competition’s Commercial Building Division in Las Vegas, NV.  Wentworth students utilized their comprehensive training in construction, engineering technology, presentation, and group projects to enable them to fulfill the competition requirements in the allotted time.

The proposed project, which had an estimated value of $25 million, was a new addition and renovation to an aquarium in Seattle, WA built on piles in the bay.  Team members Mike Gawendo, Adam Woods, Steve Gelinas, Joe Wayne, Nick Rouleau, and Jared Crowley, along with coach/professor Scott Sumner from the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environment, earned the opportunity to participate in the national competition as a result of winning the regional competition in November 2007.

The competition featured the seven regional team winners from a field of over 70 schools that offer a Bachelors Degree in Construction.  Included in the Commercial Building Construction Division were Wentworth Institute of Technology, Auburn University, California State University-Sacramento, Colorado State University, Iowa State University, Milwaukee School of Engineering, and Texas A&M University.

The event was co-sponsored by the ASC, AGC, and the national sponsoring company, Turner Construction, a major commercial contracting corporation.  The competition required the teams to prepare a construction plan, estimate, construction schedule, safety plan, key issue analysis proposal and formal presentation to the clients.  The students were sequestered in a hotel room for 12 hours to prepare the information from a set of construction documents given to them at the start of competition.

Students were awarded trophies and a cash prize was awarded to Wentworth’s construction management program, which will be used to assist with fundraising efforts for future competitions.
