Boston, MA – January 14, 2008 – Wentworth Institute of Technology announces the appointment of Stephen C. Nodvin, Ph.D. as the new head of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Science, which is responsible for providing math and science courses to all students enrolled in the Institute’s 15 bachelor degree programs. The department also houses the Institute’s new bachelor degree program in environmental science, which will utilize Dr. Nodvin’s environment and technology expertise to help expand and grow the program.
Dr. Nodvin will be actively involved in the Institute’s development efforts in math and sciences, including expanding college-level offerings, researching and implementing new articulation agreements with other higher education institutions, and strengthening K-12 educational programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
“At Wentworth, applied math and science faculty members teach courses critical to the success of students in all programs at the Institute,” said Dr. Nodvin. “In addition to the honor and opportunity to lead such a group of highly skilled and dedicated faculty members, I look forward to applying my environmental knowledge and experience to help attract, train and prepare students to enter into the exciting field of environmental science.”
Nodvin has served as an academic administrator, a government researcher and administrator, a university professor, a business owner and entrepreneur, and a technical consultant and sales engineer for high tech companies. He has been involved in environmental education for more than 35 years and has taught classes on global climate change for nearly 20 years. Al Gore's Climate Project, the Encyclopedia of Earth, and the Union of Concerned Scientists, are a sampling of organizations with which Dr. Nodvin collaborates in to enhance understanding of important environmental issues.
Dr. Nodvin was selected to serve as a research trainee at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and became a Phi Beta Kappa honoree before receiving his bachelor's degree in biology from Emory University. As a National Science Foundation pre-doctoral fellow, he conducted research on environmental impacts to ecosystems in New England. Dr. Nodvin received his doctorate in ecology and evolutionary biology from Cornell University.
