Boston, MA – June 26, 2007 – Wentworth Institute of Technology has announced the launch of a new Environmental Science program to provide opportunities for students to create solutions for industry, government, and communities facing environmental issues. In addition, the new bachelor degree program will address the market demand for well-trained, qualified workers in the environmental science field, which has been identified as one of the fastest-growing job sectors while experiencing a shortage of qualified workers. The Institute will leverage resources and faculty from participating Colleges of the Fenway (COF) institutions as the program is implemented in Fall 2007.
Students enrolled in the environmental science program will choose from the following three specialty tracks based on their academic and future career areas of interest: science and technology, health and safety, and policy and pre-law. By developing a broad-based education in the natural and physical sciences, including biology, chemistry, and physics, student will be able to apply the acquired knowledge to solve contemporary environmental problems facing industry, governments and local, regional, and global communities. Students will become better prepared for entering the workforce and applying inter-disciplinary team problem solving as they are exposed to differing environmental disciplines and focus on sustainable practice strategies.
“We created this program to provide opportunities for students, break new ground in environmental science, and offer greater flexibility in meeting career interests, fueling the local economy,” said Jack Duggan, associate professor and environmental science program coordinator at Wentworth. “Students will become more versatile and adaptable as they absorb perspectives shared by students from different programs and schools, mirroring the multi-disciplinary teams that are ever-present in today’s industry.”
Students earn a degree from Wentworth and participate in a university experience by cross-registering and attending classes at other COF member-institutions. Wentworth’s hallmark co-op program will continue to be an integral component of the educational experience, opening opportunities for students to participate in new experiences and create a niche aligned with their environmental interests.

The Colleges of the Fenway is a collaborative effort of six neighboring Boston-based colleges in the Fenway area: Emmanuel College, Massachusetts College of Art, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Simmons College, Wentworth Institute of Technology, and Wheelock College. This collaboration was created to add value to student academic and social life while seeking innovative methods of investing in new services and containing the costs of higher education.
