Boston, MA – May 3, 2007 – Wentworth Institute of Technology today announced that faculty member Dr. George Nicholas Katsiaficas has been recognized by the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board as a Fulbright scholar grantee to Chonnam National University in Gwangju, South Korea. This research award will focus on studying East Asian democracy movements in the 1980's and 1990's, and the research he conducts as a Fulbright scholar will help with the completion of a book he is authoring on the subject. Dr. Katsiaficas will depart in January 2008 for one full year.
“This is a great accomplishment for Wentworth and Dr. Katsiaficas,” said Jack Green, department head of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Management Department. “His proven academic achievement and commitment to international understanding makes him a very deserving recipient of this award. The material has already been incorporated into our Social Movements course curriculum.”
According to the United States Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, which oversees the operations of Fulbright Programs, the Fulbright award recipients “are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields.” The Fulbright Program’s purpose is to build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the rest of the world, and the Program operates in over 150 countries worldwide.
