Wentworth Hosts 24th Annual MATHCOUNTS Competition

Wentworth to Award Four Scholarships to Winners

Boston, MA – March 9, 2007 – Wentworth Institute of Technology will host the 24th Annual State MATHCOUNTS Competition on Saturday, March 10, marking the eleventh year that the institute has hosted the competition, which showcases the math talents and skills of students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. For the third year, Wentworth will be awarding full, four-year tuition scholarships to the top four winners. In an effort to promote women in math, should a female not finish in the top four finalist positions, an additional scholarship award will be given to the top female competitor. (See photos.)

Approximately 150 students from 30 Massachusetts schools will compete to determine who will represent Massachusetts in the National Competition, hosted by Lockheed Martin, in Fort Worth, TX on May 10-13, 2007. Also in attendance will be approximately 100-150 coaches and parents.

Individual written competitions and the team rounds include subjects such as probability, statistics, linear algebra, and polynomials. The competition is followed by a countdown round where two students go one-on-one to answer questions as quickly as possible.

The State MATHCOUNTS competitions, sponsored by the Massachusetts Society of Professional Engineers (MSPE), are held in 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories, and are the culmination of individual chapter competitions for over 125,000 6th -8th grade students representing more than 6,000 schools. MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide program designed to increase enthusiasm for, and advancement in, middle school mathematics at a crucial stage for developing and sustaining interest and ability in math.
