Environmental Science Program Hosts Lecture on Boston’s Back Bay

Boston, MA – February 22, 2007 – Wentworth Institute of Technology's Environmental Science Program hosted two leading experts and academics on the history of the Back Bay. William Newman and Wilfred Holton, professors at Northeastern and authors of the award winning book, "Boston's Back Bay: The Story of America's Greatest Nineteenth-Century Landfill Project," presented their research on the project that turned a polluted, foul smelling tidal marsh into one of the premier neighborhoods of Boston. The presentation provided illustrated historical and current maps and explained the environmental, social and economic factors that led to the filling of Boston's Back Bay, an area that stretched from the Boston Commons to the Wentworth campus. Wentworth professor Jim Lambrechts, who was referenced throughout the book, also shared his insight on how the landfill project continues to affect building foundations in the area.
