Wentworth was honored at a banquet held by nearly ten top city officials and led by Vice Mayor Zhu Shanlu. In major Chinese cities, the mayor attends most of the ceremonial activities and the vice mayor is actively involved in current / future projects. Vice Mayor Zhu oversees all educational activities and is in charge of all volunteers and planning for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.
President Pantić presented Vice Mayor Zhu with framed, personally addressed, congratulatory letters from Senator Kerry and Congressman Capuano.
Discussions regarding student and faculty exchanges were held and Vice Mayor Zhu advised of an additional $30 million in funding that the city was putting into expanding these programs. The opportunities and challenges presented by hosting the Olympics were discussed.
Wentworth was also honored at a banquet hosted by Beijing’s Chaoyang School District - home to perhaps the leading educational network of high schools and preparatory schools in the city.
Another possible student exchange that received initial discussion was a "Walk in the Steps of China" program. This would be a shorter, cultural and hands-on based visit of perhaps three-weeks and include everything from peasant farms to manufacturing plants.
