Welcome to the Department of Design & Facilities.

Wentworth Institute was chartered in 1904 with a bequest from Arioch Wentworth to create a school that merged arts and technology in a structured workshop environment.

Wentworth's vision is sustained in our Department with unique nationally recognized curriculums that combine studio classes, co-operative work experiences, and the active involvement of industry professionals working side-by-side in support of the fulltime faculty. The mission of the Department is to offer programs and instruction for the novice that reflects the integrated nature of today's design and facility management industries.

The three programs of study include bachelor degrees in Interior Design, Industrial Design, and Facility Planning and Management. Interior Design is accredited by FIDER; Industrial Design by NASAD; and the Facilities Planning and Management degree is Recognized by IFMA as one of only six in the world to meet industry education standards.

The studies begin with a common Foundation Year of Design and Drawing classes. Students are encouraged to explore and expand their skills to prepare them for the rigor of their first studio classes in the Sophomore year. The Department is one of the few academic units in the United States that has dedicated studio space for sophomores as well as the juniors and seniors.

The unique combination of degree programs and the Foundation Year promotes an outstanding opportunity for collaboration so that the student can explore a range of career options. Design & Facilities graduates hold senior positions in major companies and organizations including the leading design firms in New England and New York City , the Harvard School of Public Health, Wellesley College, General Dynamics Corporation, and retail giants such as the Gap, and Staples, among others.
