NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Chargers used goals from Ashley Beaulieu (Manchester, N.H.), Elise Kapp (Yarmouth Port, Mass.) and Phoebe Wolcott-Macausland (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) to defeat the Leopards of Wentworth Institute of Technology Tuesday, 3-2, securing their third-straight post-season appearance in The Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament.
The Chargers got on the board early, thanks to Beaulieu's goal off a pass from sophomore Laura Sansoucie (Haverhill, Mass.), as she placed the ball past Wentworth keeper Kirsten Vallone (Avon, N.Y.) for the first score in the 26th minute.
The Chargers added one more just thee minutes later when Kapp took a Raina Ferguson (Pittsfield, Mass.) pass and found the lower left corner of the goal, putting Colby-Sawyer ahead 2-0.
Wentworth answered just before halftime as Sarah Norkiewicz (Dracut, Mass.) beat Colby-Sawyer keeper Christina Quirk (Milford, Conn.), cutting the Charger lead in half.
Wolcott-Macausland tacked on what proved to be the game winner just 13 minutes into the second half, rebounding a saved Kapp shot and putting the ball in goal, giving the Chargers the 3-1 advantage.
Wentworth's Katie Brown (North Brookfield, Mass.) tacked on a goal with just under two minutes remaining, cutting the Charger lead to one, 3-2, but the Colby-Sawyer defense held on for the victory.
Vallone tallied four saves in the loss for the Leopards while Quirk made nine saves, six in the second half, for the Chargers.
Wentworth falls to 8-7-2 overall, 8-4-1 in TCCC play and is also guaranteed a spot in The Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament. Their seed has yet to be determined, although they currently occupy the No. 6 spot in the standings.
The victory guarantees the Chargers (8-8-2, 6-6-1 TCCC) the No. 7 seed in the upcoming The Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament. The Chargers will travel to either Western New England College or Endicott in the first round of the tournament on Saturday, October 27.
