BOSTON, Mass. – Senior defender Jocelyn Martin’s (Somerset, Mass.) goal with 11:28 remaining in regulation knotted the game at 1-all and neither Wentworth nor the University of New England could get the game-winner over the next 31:28, as the two team played to a 1-1 tie in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played at Sweeney Field.
At the 25:06 mark, the visitors broke the ice when senior forward Amanda Smith (Londonderry, N.H.) blasted a shot to the upper right corner of the goal. Wentworth would have three legit chance to tie the game in the 36th minute of play, but came away with nothing. Despite trailing, the hosts held an 8-4 shot advantage after 45:00 of play.
The Leopards came out shooting in the second half, outshooting the Nor’easters 7-1 over the first 16:00 minutes of play, but could not get the equalizer. In the 79th minute, the Leopards were fouled outside of the 18-yard box. Martin took the direct kick from the left hand side and found the upper right corner to tie the game. Continuing to mount pressure, Wentworth had four shots late in the game to give them a 15-5 advantage in the second half.
Midway through the first overtime, the Leopards had a flurry of activity that almost led to the game-winning goal. Junior forward Katie Brown (North Brookfield, Mass.) would hit the crossbar with a shot and the rebound would come out to senior midfielder Evelyn Hadden (North Smithfield, R.I.), whose shot was saved by sophomore keeper Leigh Engel (Richmondville, N.Y.). The rebound bounced out to freshman Megan Rogoff (Uncasville, Conn.), but Engel came up with a huge save to preserve the tie. In the second overtime, Wentworth held a 3-0 shot advantage, but each team would come away with one point on the evening.
Freshman Kirsten Vallone (Avon, N.Y.) made four saves for Wentworth, while Engel made 10 stops for the Nor’Easters, including four in the two overtime period combined. The Leopards held a 32-11 shot advantage, with 24 of those coming in the final 65 minutes.
Wentworth presently stands at 6-6-2 overall and 6-3-1 in TCCC play. The Leopards travel to Anna Maria on Tuesday. UNE is 3-9-1 (3-6-1) and hosts Anna Maria on Saturday.
