BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman forward Sarah Norkiewicz (Dracut, Mass.) scored the game-tying goal with 22:50 left in regulation, and neither team would get the go-ahead goal as Wentworth (1-4-1) and Emerson (2-2-2) played to a 1-1 tie in a non-conference contest at Sweeney Field.
Neither team could get the upper hand in the first half, as Emerson held a slim, 8-7 shot advantage, but only two of those shots went on net, as opposed to four from the Leopards.
At the 63:56 mark, Lion freshman midfielder Lindsay D’Andrea (Medford, N.J.) broke in all alone down the left side and broke the scoring drought. However, the lead would not last long as Norkiewicz put in a rebound of a sophomore defender Mallory Beirne (Guilford, Conn.) shot for her first collegiate goal, which came 4:14 after Emerson had gone up 1-0.
In the 82nd minute Emerson had a chance to go ahead, but senior keeper Allison Wellman (Chelmsford, Mass.) stopped a freshman midfielder Stephanie Hachem (Shrewsbury, Mass.) shot from point-blank range. Over the course of the second half, Wentworth held an 11-9 shot advantage.
The Leopards, who would outshoot the Lions 3-0 in the two overtimes, had their best chance to score the golden goal when junior forward Katie Brown (North Brookfield, Mass.) put Wentworth’s only shot on goal in the extra frame, but was saved by freshman Ana Lowry (Barrington, R.I.).
Wellman made eight saves—four in each half—for the Leopards, who held a 21-17 advantage in shots. Lowry made four saves and allowed one goal in 65:00 of action. She came on for senior Katie Harman (Northfield, N.J.), who made two first-half saves.
Emerson returns to GNAC play on Wednesday with a game against Daniel Webster. Wentworth hits the road for a pair of TCCC games, beginning with a Thursday tilt at Western New England.
