BOSTON, Mass. – A pair of second half goals, including the game winner from senior forward Caitlin Mayo (Merrimack, N.H.) with 7:16 remaining lifted the Roger Williams women’s soccer team (4-1, 2-0 The Commonwealth Coast Conference) to a 2-1 win over Wentworth (1-3, 1-1) in a TCCC contest played at Sweeney Field.
Wentworth held an early 6-1 advantage in shots, including three on net for the Leopards. In the 16th minute of play, freshman forward Sarah Norkiewicz (Dracut, Mass.) gave Wentworth its best chance to score when she came in on a breakaway. However, sophomore keeper Jen Garside (Londonderry, N.H.) stopped the attempt at point-blank range. Roger Williams would have its best chance to score in the 24th minutes of action when sophomore forward Amanda daCunha (Wethersfield, Conn.) had a breakaway of her own that was stoned by senior keeper Allison Wellman (Chelmsford, Mass.).
With just 54 seconds remaining in the first half, Wentworth would draw first blood when junior midfielder Chelsea Carron (Southbridge, Mass.) scored her third goal in the last two games when she blasted a shot from inside the 18-yard box that went over Garside’s head and into the back of the net.
In the second stanza, the Hawks grabbed a quick 5-2 advantage in shots and at 64:47, seninor defender Ashley Steenbruggen (Wilmington, Mass.) would take a pass from sophomore midfielder Carey Baldwin (West Hartford, Conn.) and beat Wellman, who had come out to play the ball.
Both teams would mount pressure on the opponents’ defense, but neither was able to take the lead. However, with 7:16 remaining in the contest, freshman defender Taryn Mancarella (Rochester, N.Y.) made a pass that took a high bounce off of the turf, where senior Mayo would score into an open net. The Hawks had a chance to increase their lead to 3-1 in the 86th minute, but Wellman made a terrific save off a header from daCunha.
Garside made seven saves for the Hawks, while Wellman turned aside six shots. The Leopards held a 15-13 shot advantage, but were outshot 9-4 in the second half.
Wentworth is back in action Thursday night when the Leopards host 13th-ranked Western Connecticut. Roger Williams hosts Endicott on Saturday.
