BOSTON, Mass. – Junior midfielder Chelsea Carron’s (Southbridge, Mass.) second goal of the game, coming with 9:27 remaining in the second half snapped a 1-all tie and lifted the Wentworth women’s soccer team to its first win of the season, 2-1, over Regis in The Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both squads.
After the Pride committed a hand-ball violation in the 18-yard area, Carron gave Wentworth a 1-0 lead when her penalty kick found the lower right corner of the net at 13:36. The Leopards, who held a 13-1 advantage in shots over the first 45:00, had a pair of quality chances near the end of the half, but both hit the post.
The Pride would pull even at 66:26 when sophomore forward Meghan Roan (Whitman, Mass.) would beat the Wentworth defense and fire a shot that beat freshman keeper Kirsten Vallone (Avon, N.Y.) to the left side. Carron had a chance to put Wentworth up 2-1 with 14:13 left when she one-timed a shot from right in front of the goal mouth that Regis senior keeper Megan O’Donnell (Everett, Mass.) stopped.
At the 80:33 mark, Carron took a pass from senior defender Martha Bergeron (Westfield, Mass.) and fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that found the upper right corner and gave the Leopards a 2-1 lead. Wentworth had chances to add insurances goals, but O’Connell made a pair of saves in the game’s final five minutes.
Vallone, making her collegiate debut, made one save on two shots in the final 45:00 to earn the victory. She had come on in relief of senior Allison Wellman (Chelmsford, Mass.), who made one save in the first half. O’Connell made 16 saves for Regis, which was oushot by a 32-6 margin.
With the win, Wentworth cracks the win column (1-2, 1-0 TCCC) and hosts Roger Williams Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. Regis falls to 0-2 (0-1) and is at Gordon that same day at 3:30 p.m.
