Southern Maine vs Wentworth (11/07/07)

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior midfielder Chris Hartmann (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) tallied all three of Wentworth’s goals as the third-seeded Leopards earned their first-ever ECAC Men’s Soccer Tournament victory with a 3-0 win over Southern Maine in a quarterfinal match played at Sweeney Field.

It wouldn’t take long for the hosts to get on the board, as 1:44 into the contest senior forward Kyle Becker (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) fed Hartmann, who beat a defender and buried a shot from 15 yards out.  At the 23:09 mark Hartmann would finish off a feed from senior defender Joe Carroll (Lebanon, Conn.) with a one-timer.  Shortly thereafter, the Huskies had a chance to crack the scoring column, but junior midfielder Greg Cox’s (Brookline, Mass.) shot form the left side was turned away by senior keeper Joe Simon (Pittsfield, Mass.), one of three saves he made in the first 45:00.

Wentworth, which held a 9-4 shot advantage over the course of the first half, had a chance to go up 3-0 in the 59th minute when junior defender Ben Hamlin (Vernon, Conn.) blistered a shot toward the upper right corner of the net, but rattled the crossbar instead.   Hartmann would finish the hat trick at 76:46 on a feed from senior defender Kevin Neilan (Kensington, Conn.).  That goal, the 15th of his senior campaign, tied the school record for goals in a season, held also by Mike Martins ‘97.

Southern Maine had a pair of scoring opportunities in the final 10 minutes of action, including in the 87th minute when sophomore midfielder Tegan Udeh (Scarborough, Maine) fired a shot off the near post, but could not break up the Leopards’ eighth shutout of the season.

Simon finished the game with four saves to record his sixth shutout of the season, while sophomore David Kreps (Agawam, Mass.) made 10 saves for the Huskies.  The Leopards outshot Southern Maine, 21-8, which included a 12-4 margin in the second half.

With the win Wentworth improves to 14-5-1, which ties the school record for wins in a season set in 2001.  The Leopards will travel to second-seeded Framingham State, a 2-1 winner over seventh-seeded Colby-Sawyer, on Saturday for a semifinal match.  Southern Maine ends its season with a 10-9-1 record.
