Wentworth vs Western New England (11/03/07)

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior forward Dale Totman (Conway, Mass.) recorded a natural hat trick in the first 27:31 of the contest and senior keeper Steve Hennessey (Essex Junction, Vt.) made a pair of saves as the Wentworth New England men’s soccer team won the 2007 The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship with a 3-0 win over Wentworth.

The Golden Bears, playing for the title in their inaugural season in TCCC, wasted little time drawing first blood when Totman buried a shot to the left side at the 4:32.  Three minutes and 16 seconds later Totman would find the back of the for the second time when a sophomore midfielder Justin Martins (Ludlow, Mass.) corner kick was initially deflected by Wentworth senior keeper Joe Simon (Pittsfield, Mass.) and sent out through the box where Totman got a foot on it to give WNEC a 2-0 lead.

At the 27:31, Totman completed his hat trick, as well as all of the scoring for the day, when he converted a pass from senior midfielder Ben Wells (Morrissville, Vt.) and beat Simon to the left.

Hennessey picked up his eighth shutout of the season, needing to make just two saves.  Simon turned aside four shots in the loss.  The Golden Bears outshot the Leopards, 13-9.

With the win, Western New England improves to 14-5-2 and will be making its fourth consecutive appearance the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament, where the pairings will be announced on Monday.  Wentworth, making its first TCCC title game appearance since 2000, falls to 13-5-1 and is under consideration for an ECAC Tournament berth, which the pairings will also come out on Monday.
