BRISTOL, R.I. – With a berth to the TCCC Championship game on the line, one shootout goal proved to be the difference in the semifinal match between Roger Williams men’s soccer team and Wentworth. The Leopards advanced to their first TCCC title game since 2000, 3-2 on penalty kicks after the game was officially declared a draw after 110 minutes of scoreless soccer
After first period where the Hawk defense held the Leopards without a shot on goal, Hawk goalkeeper Peter Plate (Commack, N.Y.) found himself much more active in the second half and first overtime periods. Plate made six saves in the second half and three in the first overtime, keeping the Hawks’ chance of advancing alive. His counterpart, Joe Simon (Pittsfield, Mass.) played equally impressive in goal for Wentworth, making seven stops on the day en route to sending the game into a shootout.
Over the course of 110 minutes, Wentworth held a 19-16 shot advantage, including 15 over the final 65:00, while corner kicks were even at 10 apiece.
In the shootout, Chris Hartmann (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) gave Wentworth an early 1-0 advantage on the Leopards’ first shot after Simon blocked Kevin Canty’s (Proctor, Vt.) attempt. However, the Hawks would answer right back, as Justin Plourde (Concord, N.H.) and Antoine Bell (Bordeaux, France) each converted their opportunities to put RWU up 2-1.
The momentum then swung back in favor of Wentworth, as Dan Saccoccio’s (Holtsville, N.Y.) shot hooked just to the left, while Kyle Nasman (Lenox, Mass.) netted his kick to tie the penalty kicks at two apiece.
With the final shot for each team, Simon stopped Brandon O’Donovan’s (Coram, N.Y.) attempt, giving Wentworth the chance to win. Kyle Becker (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) came through for his squad with the game-winning shot to send the Leopards (13-4-1) into the TCCC Championship, where they will face top-seeded Western New England Saturday, who defeated Colby-Sawyer by a 1-0 score earlier in the day. Back on Sept 17, the Golden Bears nipped the Leopards, 1-0
Roger Williams stands at 11-6-3 and is under consideration for an ECAC Tournament berth.
