BOSTON, Mass. – Senior midfielder Adam Gould’s (Hermon, Maine) goal with 10:46 remaining snapped a 1-all tie and lifted the Curry men’s soccer team (3-4-3, 1-1-3 The Commonwealth Coast Conference) to a 2-1 upset over Wentworth (5-3-0, 2-2-0) in a TCCC contest played at Sweeney Field. The loss for the Leopards snapped a 13-game home winning streak, dating back to October, 2005.
The Colonels took a 1-0 lead at the 18:35 mark of the contest when junior forward Jeff Shea (Canton, Mass.) fed classmate Clayton Corto (Manchester, Conn.), who would tally his sixth goal of the season. Just under six minutes later Wentworth got the equalizer when senior midfielder Chris Hartmann (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) fed a pass to junior forward Matt Martins (Bristol, R.I.), who would find the back of the net. The Leopards would have two solid chances near the end of the half, put could not go ahead.
After the Leopards had a corner kick in the 79th minute of play, the Colonels would gain possession and advance into Wentworth’s end of the field. Junior forward Alexander Birn (Jamestown, R.I.) would feed Gould, who was streaking up the left side. Gould’s shot was initially saved by senior Brad Loew (East Meadow, N.Y.), but would squirt out of his hands beyond the goal line.
Senior Clark Zelazo (Palmer, Mass.) made six saves to pick up the win. Loew took the loss, making three saves in 45:00. He had come on in relief of sophomore Mike Gregory (Rockaway, N.J.), who made five first-half saves.
Curry is back in action Thursday when the Colonels travel to New England College. Wentworth will face Gordon on Saturday at 4:00 p.m., at Sweeney Field.
