MIT vs Wentworth (09/18/07)

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior forward Kyle Nasman (Lenox, Mass.) scored in the 78th minute to snap a 1-all tie and lift the Wentworth men’s soccer team (4-2-0) to a 2-1 win over MIT (3-1-1) in a non-conference contest played at Sweeney Field.  Both teams entered tonight’s tilt ranked in the most recent (Sept. 18) adidas/NSCAA New England Soccer Rankings, with Wentworth holding the #8 position and MIT tied for #10.

MIT drew first blood in the contest when junior midfielder Neil Zimmerman (Dallas, Texas) wound up with the ball amidst a scrum of players in front of the goal.  The shot would deflect off sophomore keeper Mike Gregory’s (Rockaway, N.J.) hands and find the upper middle part of the net.

The Engineers’ lead would not last long as senior midfielder Chris Hartmann (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) fired a shot that MIT junior keeper Tom Caldwell (East Berlin, Pa.) initially saved.  However, on the rebound, freshman midfielder Ben Nasman (Lenox, Mass.) would tie the game at 1-all at 12:35.

Despite neither team being able to score for the duration of the half, the hosts had the best chance to go ahead in the 38th minute.  Freshman Jeff Dubé (Kennebunk, Maine) headed a shot, which bounced off the crossbar.  On the rebound, Hartmann would do the same, and after he claimed his own rebound, he fired a shot over the crossbar.  After 45:00 of play, Wentworth held a 14-7 shot advantage.

In the first 16:00 of the second half, the Leopards held a 7-2 shot advantage, including a Hartmann shot that would hit the post of an open goal on a corner kick play.  After MIT tallied two consecutive shots, including one Gregory saved, Jeff Dubé would feed a pass from left to right to Kyle Nasman, who put Wentworth ahead with a shot to the left side with 12:07 left to play.

Gregory, making his first appearance of 2007, made six saves.  Caldwell turned aside seven shots for MIT.  Wentworth held a 24-14 advantage in shots.

The win was the first for Wentworth over MIT in the last six meetings, with the last series win coming on a 2-1 overtime win on Sept. 27, 2001, at Sweeney Field.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday.  MIT is at Wheaton (1:00 p.m.), while Wentworth is at New England College (2:30 p.m.
