BOSTON, Mass. – A pair of second half goals coming within 3:56 of each other enabled the Wentworth men’s soccer team to open play in The Commonwealth Coast Conference with a 2-1 win over three-time defending conference champion Roger Williams.
The Leopards, ranked 10th in New England, jumped out to an early 5-2 shot advantage in the first 20:14 of the game, including putting three shots on goal. However, it would be the Hawks who would draw first blood when senior forward Evan Solis (Seymour, Conn.) capitalized on a Wentworth turnover and fed senior forward Antoine Bell (Bordeaux, France), who tallied his second goal of the season when he placed a shot to the lower left corner of the net at 23:38. Solis had a chance to put the Hawks up 2-0, but hit a post in the 30th minute of play, and Roger Williams’ defense shut down any offensive chance Wentworth had.
The Hawks, who were out shot by a 9-5 margin over the first 45:00, began the second half with four shot attempts in the first 15:00, including when junior back Ardy Jagne (Bronx, N.Y.) headed a cross that was saved by Wentworth senior Joe Simon (Pittsfield, Mass.) at 54:57. However, the Leopards would knot the game at 2-all when senior forward Kyle Becker (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) capitalized on a turnover and fired a shot over Hawks’ keeper Peter Plate’s (Commack, N.Y.) head and into the back of the net at 62:58.
Less than four minutes later, the Hawks were called for a hand ball violation outside of the penalty area. Senior midfielder Chris Hartmann (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) took the direct kick, which first hit the right post and then ricocheted across the goal line at 66:54. The goal was Hartmann’s fourth of the season and his second game-winning tally of his senior campaign.
The Hawks would put pressure on the Leopards by outshooting the hosts 5-0 over the remainder of the contest and had one last shot with three seconds remaining when sophomore back Chris Guerrini (Glastonbury, Conn.) fired a shot from within the 18-yard area that Simon saved.
Simon improved to 3-1 by making four saves, including three in the second half. Plate would also make four saves, but zero in the second half. The shots would wind up even at 13, but the visitors held an 8-4 advantage in the second half.
Wentworth improves to 3-1-0 (1-0-0 TCCC) and travels to Western New England for the first-ever meeting between the two schools on Monday at 4:00 p.m. The Golden Bears are currently ranked eighth in New England. Roger Williams (0-4-1, 0-1-1) hosts Endicott Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
