BABSON PARK, Mass. –Senior Garrett Bates (Norwell, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal for the second consecutive day as the Babson College Beavers edged the visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards, 1-0, to claim the 2007 Babson Invitational Men's Soccer Tournament Championship at Hartwell-Rogers Field on Saturday afternoon.
After scoring Babson's first goal just 3:35 into regulation in the team's 4-0 win over Salve Regina on Friday, Barrett struck even more quickly on Saturday, netting the game's only goal less than three minutes into the contest. Sophomore Dan Fogarty (Brookline, N.H.) fired a cross from the left corner that Bates headed inside the right post at 2:56, putting the Beavers in front 1-0.
That would prove to be all the offense Babson would need, as senior goalie Chris Necklas (Guilford, Conn.) and the Beavers' defense held Wentworth to just four shot attempts in the contest. The Leopards' best chance came with 9:15 left in the second half, when junior Matt Martins (Bristol, R.I.) broke free down the left side and fired a shot from the just outside the box. However, Necklas slid to his left to make a clean standing catch for his only save of the contest.
Senior goalie Joe Simon (Pittsfield, Mass.) went the distance in net for Wentworth, finishing with 10 saves. The Leopards will face Brandies in their home opener on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
