BOSTON, Mass. – Junior midfielder Bobby Cusack (Braintree, Mass.) netted his third goal of the afternoon with 17 seconds left in overtime to give the University of Massachusetts Boston men’s lacrosse team a 5-4 victory over visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology today at the Clark Athletic Center field on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons improve to 3-7 on the season, while the Leopards fall to 6-5.
Cusack took a feed at the top of the box from freshman middie Jared Kinch (Cohasset, MA) and unleashed a low shot that skipped into the back of the net to provide the difference for UMass Boston.
Freshman attackman John Canty (Milton, Mass.) sent the match into overtime for the Beacons when he took a shot from the left side of the box that found the upper-right corner with 76 seconds left in regulation to pull UMB even at 4-4.
Sophomore attackman Dale Nunn (Hillsborough, N.J.) put UMass Boston on the board when he converted a pass from Kinch for a score at the 9:53 mark of the first quarter for a 1-0 edge, but freshman attackman Matt Cox (Granger, Ind.) popped the equalizer for Wentworth at 8:56 of the second quarter for the only two tallies of the first half to make it 1-1 going into the intermission.
Freshman attackman Stephen Biszko (Tiverton, R.I.) gave the Leopards a 2-1 lead with a goal on a feed from senior midfielder Derek Rupert (Louisville, N.Y.) with 11:32 to go in the third quarter, but Cusack tied the score at 2-2 for the Beacons with his first goal of the day just 15 seconds later. Cox found junior middle Chris Wesche (Holden, Mass.) for another go-ahead goal for Wentworth and a 3-2 margin, but Cusack struck again for UMass Boston at 11:12 of the fourth quarter to pull it even again at 3-3. Rupert hooked up with Wesche for his second goal of the day with 7:32 remaining in the fourth period for a 4-3 Leopards’ lead before Canty tied it for UMB.
Sophomore goalie Aaron Pollock (Belmont, Mass.) stopped 18 shots, including two in the overtime period, to earn the victory for UMass Boston, while senior Nick Murphy (Cohasset, Mass.) made 16 saves for Wentworth.
Junior defender Matt Dunn (Milton, Mass.) picked up a team-high nine ground balls for the Beacons, while sophomore face-off man Justin Mahoney (Scituate, Mass.) won 10 of 12 face-offs and came up with eight ground balls on the day.
Sophomore defender Jeff Ryan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) registered a game-high 10 ground balls and senior middle Nick Lambros (Forestdale, Mass.) collected nine for the Leopards.
UMass Boston will be in action again when it hosts Western Connecticut State University on Saturday, April 19 at 1:00 p.m., while Wentworth travels to Biddeford, Maine on April 19 to take on University of New England at 3:30 p.m.
