\BOSTON, Mass. – Using a 12-3 run that spanned 31:38, the Roger Williams men’s lacrosse team broke open a 2-2 tie after 15 minutes of action and cruised to a 16-11 win over Wentworth in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played at Sweeney Field.
The Hawks (7-5, 5-1 TCCC) wasted little time getting on the board when junior midfielder Joe Healey (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) scored an unassisted tally a mere 28 seconds into the contest. Two and a half minutes later, Healey would feed junior attackman Beaver Barone (Weymouth, Mass.), who tallied a man-up goal. Wentworth fought back and pulled within one when senior midfielder Derek Rupert (Louisville, N.Y.) fed freshman attackman Stephen Biszko (Tiverton, R.I.) with 8:24 left, and, with 6:51 to play, junior midfielder Chris Wesche (Holden, Mass.) would assist on senior midfielder Nick Lambros’ (Forestdale, Mass.) game-tying goal.
Roger Williams began the scoring in the second the same way it opened the first—with Healey scoring 28 seconds into the quarter. Junior attackman Packy Markham (Cutchogue, N.Y.), who assisted on Healey’s goal, scored from Barone to make it a 4-2 game with 13:07 left in the half. Wentworth freshman attackman Matt Cox (Granger, Ind.) pulled the Leopards within one with an unassisted goal with 9:47 left, but the Hawks took over from there, scoring the next five goals to make it a 9-3 game with 13:14 left in the third quarter. Wesche fed Biszko to cut the lead to 9-4, but senior midfielder Slade Patterson (Needham, Mass.) would tally once and junior attackman Dave Hurley (Hanover, Mass.) would score twice, all in a span of 40 seconds to up the lead to 12-4.
Trailing 14-5 entering the final 15:00 of play, the Leopards would score six times in the final stanza with sophomore attackman Mike Mercurio (Pepperrell, Mass.) scoring twice and adding an assist and Wesche tallying once and helping on another, but could not overcome the deficit.
Hurley finished the game with four goals and two assists, while Markham (three goals, two assists), Healey (three goals, one assist), and Barone (two goals, two assists) all recorded four or more points. The Hawks dominated the face-off X, winning 23 of 30 face-offs. Senior Dan Endrusick (Duxbury, Mass.), who also collected a game-high 11 ground balls, won 15-of-17 face-offs.
Wentworth was led by Wesche, who scored three times and added a pair of assists, while Cox and Mercurio each scored three points. Rupert collected a team-high five ground balls.
In goal, senior Bobby Hensley (Simsbury, Conn.) made 10 saves and allowed seven goals in 54:23 of action. Freshman Tyler Roebuck (Montgomery, N.Y.) made a pair of saves while allowing four goals over the final 5:37. For Wentworth, senior Nick Murphy (Cohasset, Mass.) made 10 saves and allowed 13 goals in 40:41. Sophomore Sean Tobin (Silver Spring, Md.) made eight saves and allowed three goals in 19:19 of work.
The Leopards step out of conference play on Thursday for a game at UMass Boston, while Roger Williams is idle until Saturday when the Hawks travel to 15th-ranked Endicott on Saturday.
