WENHAM, Mass. – Gordon College junior attack Drew Straton (Carmel, Ind.) scored five goals and added an assist as the Fighting Scots defeated Wentworth Inst. of Technology, 12-4, this afternoon in a lightning-shortened Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) contest this afternoon at the Brigham Athletic Complex on the campus of Gordon College.
The Fighting Scots (5-6, 4-2) found themselves knotted at 1-1 with the Leopards (6-3, 4-2) after one quarter as GC freshman Jordan MacIntosh (Oakville, Ontario) and WIT’s Ryan Hubert (Portland, Maine) each tallied goals for their respective sides.
The Fighting Scots broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring their opponents 6-0 as Straton tallied three goals in the frame to give the home team a 7-1 advantage at the break. MacIntosh added a pair of assists in the quarter for the Scots who scored on two man-up opportunities.
GC tacked on two more to open the third quarter as MacIntosh struck again and Straton scored on a feed from sophomore Danny Mack (Dublin, Ohio). With 6:54 to play, the Leopards made it a 9-2 game as freshman Stephen Biszko (Tiverton, R.I.) found the back of the cage on a feed from Nick Lambros (Forestdale, Mass.). Straton would add one more with just four seconds remaining in the third and the Scots held an 11-2 lead after three.
In the fourth, Biszko would strike twice for the Leopards and GC freshman Zac Blue (Monticello, Minn.) scored the first goal of his career before severe weather moved into the area. With 4:36 to play, the contest was delayed for 20 minutes and play resumed for 50 seconds before the weather resumed and the game was called with 3:44 to play and the Scots took the 12-4 victory.
In goal for the Scots, freshman Brett Becker (Sparta, N.J.) earned the win with 11 saves while WIT’s Nick Murphy (Cohasset, Mass.) also stopped 11 shots.
Wentworth is back in action Tuesday night, facing TCCC foe Roger Williams at 7:00 p.m. The Fighting Scots will resume play next week as they travel to Nichols for a TCCC match up on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
