BOSTON, Mass. – Senior midfielder Nick Lambros (Forestdale, Mass.) scored three goals and dished out a pair of assists and freshman attackman Cory Benulis (Victor, N.Y.) added three goals of his own as the Wentworth men’s lacrosse team won its second consecutive game, holding off a late charge by Clark to prevail, 9-6.
With 9:03 to play in the fist period the visiting Cougars got on the board first when junior attackman Shawn Roche (Centerport, N.Y.) fed freshman attackman Eugene Arsenault for his first tally of the season. Nearly six minutes later the Leopards evened the score when Benulis scored his first of the game, which was assisted by classmate Stephen Biszko (Tiverton, R.I.).
Lambros netted his first of the game with 11:48 to play in the half on an unassisted tally before Clark senior Daniel Rosenak (Montclair, N.J.) tied the score at 2-all with an unassisted goal of his own. Lambros closed out the half by giving the Leopards a 3-2 lead with a marker with 1:57 left.
Wentworth would outscore Clark, 5-1, in the third quarter as sophomore defenseman Jeff Ryan got the ball rolling by picking up a ground ball and racing into the offensive zone before scoring his first of the season 1:39 into the quarter. Lambros would feed Biszko with 11:26 left to give the Leopards a 5-2 lead before Roche added his second helper of the night when he fed senior attackman Andrew Webber (Allendale, N.J.) with 10:59 left.
Twenty-four seconds later the Leopards’ lead increased to 6-3 when junior midfielder Chris Wesche (Holden, Mass.) fed Lambros for his third goal of the game. Benulis would score with 9:28 to play, while Wesche found the back of the net with 5:17 remaining in the quarter.
Trailing 8-3 entering the final 15:00 of play, the Cougars began to make a late run. With 5:19 left, freshman midfielder Sam McAdam (Portland, Maine) scored from sophomore defenseman Scott Wheeler (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) before Webber scored his second of the game, a man-up tally, 1:10 later. Benulis scored his third of the game, assisted by Lambros, a minute later to push the lead to 9-5 before sophomore attackman Garrett McAdam (Portland, Maine) rounded out the scoring with a man-up goal with 1:43 left.
Senior Nick Murphy (Cohasset, Mass.) made 10 saves in 55:29 of work, while sophomore Sean Tobin (Silver Spring, Md.) made four saves in the final 4:31. For Clark, junior Tyler Campbell (Portland, Ore.) made 15 saves in 53:34 of work, while senior Mike Fuchs (Henniker, N.H.) made a pair of saves over the final 6:26. Wentworth held a 35-29 shot advantage, despite being outshot 18-5 in the fourth quarter.
At the face-off X, the Cougars controlled 11 of 19 draws with Wheeler winning 11 of 18. Wesche and sophomore midfielder Joe Harding (Dedham, Mass.) each won four for Wentworth. Ryan would collect a game-high nine ground balls to help the Leopards hold a 43-40 advantage in that category.
With the win Wentworth improves to 2-2 and resumes The Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Saturday, hosting Salve Regina. That same day Clark, which dropped its fifth straight to fall to 1-5, is at Norwich in a Pilgrim League contest.
