BOSTON, Mass. – Freshmen attackmen Stephen Biszko (Tiverton, R.I.) and Matt Cox (Granger, Ind.) each scored three times, with Cox also adding an assist as the Wentworth lacrosse team posted its first win of the 2008 campaign with a 10-5 win over New England College in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played at Sweeney Field.
The visiting Pilgrims got on the board first when sophomore midfielder Dave Gardiner (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) netted an unassisted goal with 11:04 left in the opening stanza. However, the Leopards would score a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead after 15:00 of play. Junior attackman Corey Benulis (Victor, N.Y.) fed senior midfielder Nick Lambros (Forestdale, Mass.) for a man-up goal that tied the game with 10:24 left before Wentworth took the lead when Lambros fed Biszko with 5:34 left.
In the second period the two teams traded goals, as New England College sophomore midfielder Clint McDonough (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) fed classmate Colin Gordon (Manchester, Mass.) for a man-up tally that tied the score at 2-all with 3:15 left. On the ensuing face-off, junior midfielder Chris Wesche (Holden, Mass.) controlled the draw and sprinted into the offensive zone, where he found the back of the net with 3:01 left in the half.
Biszko would give the Leopards a 4-2 lead on a feed from senior midfielder Nick Pasco (Queensbury, N.Y.) with 8:30 remaining in the third before the Pilgrims scored the next two goals—sophomore Matt Vozzolo (Somers, Conn.) with 5:22 left and Gardiner with 1:57 to play—to knot the game at 4-all after three periods of action.
Lambros fed Biszko for his third of the game just 12 seconds into the final stanza to put Wentworth up 5-4. Wesche and senior midfielder Derek Rupert (Louisville, N.Y.) scored within 21 seconds of each other to push the lead to 7-4. Gardiner fed Vozzulo with 9:12 left to trim the lead to 7-5, but Cox, who assisted on Wesche’s tally, scored the next three goals to put the game out of reach.
Senior Nick Murphy (Cohasset, Mass.) made 10 saves in 58:49 of action before giving way to sophomore Sean Tobin (Silver Spring, Md.), who did not need to make a save in 1:11 of work. Freshman Richard Aquaviva (Syracuse, N.Y.) made 18 stops for the Pilgrims, while sophomore Richard Newcomb (Portland, Maine) did not make a save in 1:21 of work. Wentworth outshot New England College, 38-20, on the day.
The Leopards controlled the face-off x, winning 13 of 19 face-offs, including six of the first seven. Wesche won nine of the 13 face-offs he took.
The win improves Wentworth’s record to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in TCCC. New England College falls to 0-3 (0-1). Both teams are back in action with non-league games on Tuesday. The Leopards host Clark at 7:00 p.m., while the Pilgrims travel to Castleton State at 4:00 p.m.
