Curry vs Wentworth (02/16/08 at Boston, Mass. (Tansey Gymnasium))

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior guard Sarah Walker (Colchester, Vt.) scored 18 points, grabbed six rebounds, and had six steals to pace four double-figure scorers as Curry (10-13, 5-6 The Commonwealth Coast Conference) downed Wentworth (10-13, 3-8) in a TCCC contest played at Wentworth’s Tansey Gym.

For most of the opening 10 minutes of the contest, the game was tight, despite both teams having a hard time finding their shooting rhythm.  However, the Colonels would begin to open things up over the next five minutes of play.  After Leopard senior forward Emily Cring (Cicero, N.Y.) put in a second-chance basket to tie the game at 6-all with 11:18 left, Curry went on a 15-4 run and took a 21-10 lead on a pair of Walker free throws with 6:08 left.

Wentworth quickly answered with a 9-0 run of its own, spanning the next 2:31 and would tie the game at 21-all when freshman forward Sam Vinciguerra (Somersworth, N.H.) hit two free throws with 4:00 left.  After Walker converted a layup on a fast break, the Leopards responded with a jumper from junior guard Margo Ward (Mystic, Conn.) with 2:08 left and tied the game at 23-all.  However, those would be the last points the Leopards would score in the first 20:00 as the Colonels used an 8-0 run to close out the half with junior forward Christina Sancinito (Wakefield, Mass.) scoring four points and Walker added three of her own.

Trailing 35-27 early in the second half, freshman forward Kirsten Vallone (Avon, N.Y.) buried a three-pointer to trim the lead to five.  However, that would be as close as Wentworth would get as Curry went on a 20-7 run over the next 6:27 and led by 18.  Despite cutting the lead to eight with 4:00 left, the Leopards would get no closer.

Freshman forward Danyel Cousins (Brunswick, Maine) would add 16 points, including 10-for-14 from the free throw line, to go along with six steals.  Freshman forward Cortney Robinson (Brockton, Mass.) added 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Sancinito chipped in with a dozen points.  Curry’s defense forced 32 turnovers and held the hosts to 22-for-59 (37.3 percent) shooting from the floor.

Sophomore forward Jessie Coffey (Wakefield, R.I.) led the Leopards with 16 points.  Cring added nine points and eight rebounds, while Vallone added nine points and six rebounds.

Both teams are back in action Wednesday night.  Curry, which has won five of its last seven games, hosts Roger Williams, while Wentworth, which dropped its second straight, hosts Colby-Sawyer.
