BOSTON, Mass. - Junior forward Kim Mariotti (Springfield, Mass.) scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Regis women’s basketball team held Wentworth to 26.8 percent shooting from the floor, including 20.6 percent in the second half, as the Pride won its fifth consecutive game, defeating the Leopards, 63-57, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference women’s basketball game played at Tansey Gymnasium.
Wentworth (9-10, 2-5 TCCC) had the upper hand early, taking a 17-11 lead with 13:31 remaining in the first half on a jumper by senior forward Emily Cring (Cicero, N.Y.). Regis (14-4, 5-2 TCCC) would cut the lead to four before Cring buried two free throws to push the lead back to six.
The Pride scored six of the next eight points, cutting the lead to a pair with 9:39 left in the half. However, Cring answered with a basket of her own and assisted on a sophomore guard Meaghan Gardner (Shrewsbury, Mass.) three pointer to give the Leopards a seven-point lead with 6:04 left in the period.
Regis again answered as sophomore guard Katie Guanci (Arlington, Mass.) converted a layup and sophomore guard Jessica Page (Quincy, Mass.) buried a three that cut the lead to two, but Gardner would score the next five points, including a three pointer with 3:55 left that extended the lead to seven (31-24). That would prove to be the final points Wentworth would score in the first stanza, as the Pride outscored the Leopards 6-0 over the final 3:55 of the half and trail by one (31-30) heading into the break.
Sophomore guard Michelle Fauci (Boxford, Mass.) opened the second half with a layup to put Wentworth up 33-30, but a three-point play by Page tied the score and began a 9-0 run that saw Regis take a 39-33 lead. With the Pride leading 43-39 with 14:01 remaining, Wentworth scored five consecutive points, keyed by a trifecta from Gardner and took a 44-43 lead. After Page matched the long-range shot to put Regis up 46-44, Gardner answered with a basket of her own to tie the game at 46-all.
A three pointer from freshman guard Amanda Carlson (Ayer, Mass.) began a 13-5 run that saw the Pride jump out to an eight-point lead (59-51) with 6:03 left. Wentworth would cut the lead to as few as four, including 61-57 when sophomore guard Michelle Moffo (Southington, Conn.) hit two free throws with 48 ticks left, and had a chance to trim the lead to a pair, but could not convert a shot. Freshman guard Sarah McNault (Hampstead, N.H.) hit two free throws to seal the game.
Page contributed 14 points and nine rebounds, while McNult added 10 points and hauled down 14 rebounds to help the Pride. For Wentworth, which was outrebounded 55-37, Cring had 17 points and eight rebounds, Gardner had 13 points, and Fauci had 11 points, eight rebounds, and three assists.
