BOSTON, Mass. – Emerson College (5-6) went on a 12-2 run midway through the second half to break open a tight game and held on to hand Wentworth (7-4) its second consecutive loss, 59-49, in a non-conference contest. The run was keyed by a pair of sophomore Andrea Kosek (Latham, N.Y.) three point shots.
Neither team could take control of the first half as there were five ties and five lead changes. Wentworth pulled ahead 26-25 with 51 seconds remaining in the half on a layup by sophomore Meaghan Gardner (Shrewsbury, Mass.), but a freshman Kathy Andrade (Hull, Mass.) free throw and a three point shot with six seconds remaining by sophomore Alleigh Marre (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) lifted the Lions to a 29-26 halftime advantage.
Wentworth twice narrowed the margin to one point in the second half. Freshman Kirsten Vallone (Avon, N.Y.) hit a layup for the first points of the second stanza, and a free throw by Vallone made the score 32-31 with 16:48 remaining. Emerson answered with two free throws and a layup by sophomore Bri Papa (Camillus, N.Y.). A traditional three-point play by Senior Becky Everett (Orange, Mass.) swelled the Lions lead to eight points. A jumper by junior Margo Ward (Mystic, Conn.) and two sophomore Jessie Coffey (Wakefield, R.I.) free throws made the score 39-35. A jumper by Emerson junior Maude Okrah (Rutland, Mass.) and a layup by Coffey set the stage for the Lions' run.
Papa led Emerson with 15 points and gathered in 8 rebounds. Andrade had a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards.
Vallone had a double-double for Wentworth with 11 points and a dozen boards. Gardner also added 11 points, with senior Emily Cring (Cicero, N.Y.) scoring a game-high 18 points.
Both teams step into conference play on Saturday with road games. Emerson travels to Great Northeast Athletic Conference foe Norwich, while Wentworth opens play in The Commonwealth Coast Conference at Gordon. Each of these contests tips off at 1:00 p.m.
