BOSTON, Mass. -- Senior forward Emily Cring (Cicero, N.Y.) scored 32 points on 13-for-20 shooting to go along with 13 rebounds as the Wentworth women’s basketball team (7-2) closed out first semester play with a 77-51 win over Mount Ida (2-6).
The game would start slowly for the Leopards, who missed their first nine shots and were 1-for-12 over the first 2:24 of the game. During the time the Mustangs would take an early lead at (5-3). One of two free throws from sophomore guard Jessie Coffey (Wakefield, R.I.) cut the lead to 5-4 and on the next possession Coffey drained a three pointer to put Wentworth up 7-5.
After Coffey broke a 13-all tie with a layup coming with 11:29 to play, Mount Ida would regain the lead with a three pointer from freshman guard Brieanna Holiday (Dummerston, Vt.). However, the lead would be short lived as Cring converted a layup on a fast break to give Wentworth the lead, 17-16, with 9:39 remaining. That basket started a 14-2 run that spanned six minutes. During the run Cring had seven points, while freshman forward Kirsten Vallone (Avon, N.Y.) had four points.
Mount Ida used a 7-0 run over the next 1:16, fueled by a three pointer from Holiday and four points from junior guard Elise McLear (Swansea, Mass.), and would trail 29-25 with 2:35 left. However, the Leopards would outscore the Mustangs 4-2 over the remainder of the half to lead by six (33-27) at the break.
Over the first 6:19 of the second half, Wentworth broke the game open by outscoring the visitors 18-4, as Cring scored 13 of her team’s 18 points during this stretch. The Leopards would not allow the lead to drop below 18 points and took its largest lead, as well as the final margin of victory in the final 30 seconds of play.
Coffey scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds, while Vallone scored nine points, grabbed 10 rebounds, had four blocks, and four steals. As a team the Leopards forced 24 turnovers and held Mount Ida to 30 percent shooting from the floor, including 26.7 percent over the final 20:00.
The Mustangs were led by Holiday, who scored 13 points and had four steals. McLear and sophomore guard Nicole Casimiro (Lee, N.H.) each had 11 points. Wentworth won the battle on the boards, 57-30.
At 7-2, Wentworth has posted its best record through nine games, one game better than the 1996-97 squad that started out 6-3.
