BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore guard Iman Davis (Toms River, N.J.) scored 20 points on 9-for-14 shooting to go along with eight rebounds and nine steals, while senior guard Jade Paez (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 13 points, dished out 10 assists, grabbed six rebounds, and had six steals as Emmanuel defeated Wentworth, 77-53, in the first-ever meeting between the two schools which are located within less than half a mile of each other.
The Saints, who snapped a two-game losing streak, led from start to finish, using a 15-0 run to open the game and holding the Leopards without a point for nearly the first four minutes.
Leading 19-4 with 11:40 left in the half, Emmanuel went on a 14-2 run over the next four and a half minutes to lead by 27, the largest lead of the first half. The Saints would take a 42-20 lead at the half behind 14 points from Davis and eight assists from Paez.
The second half saw much of the same with Emmanuel pushing its lead to as much as 26 early in the stanza. With 16:48 to play, Wentworth senior forward Emily Cring (Cicero, N.Y.) hit a pair of free throws to become the eighth Wentworth women’s basketball player to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau. Those two free throws cut the lead to 22 (47-25), but a pair of free throws by Davis and a three-point play from Paez pushed the lead back to 27.
Emmanuel would lead by as much as 34 with 10 minutes remaining, however Wentworth would trim the lead to 25 with an 11-2 run over a three-minute span, which included five points from sophomore guard Jessie Coffey (Wakefield, R.I.).
The Saints’ defense forced 36 turnovers, which resulted in 40 Emmanuel points and would hold the hosts to 27.3 percent shooting for the game, which included 21.7 percent in the opening half.
Senior guard Leah Lipschitz (Bayside, N.Y.) helped Emmanuel’s cause with 14 points on 6-for-13 shooting, while classmate Jacque Parnell (Bloomfield, Conn.) had four assists and eight steals.
For Wentworth, Cring finished with nine points to go along with 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Michelle Fauci (Boxford, Mass.) added nine of her own, as well as having three assists and five steals. Freshman Kirsten Vallone (Avon, N.Y.) had a game-high 11 rebounds.
Both teams are back in action this weekend. Emmanuel travels to Bowdoin on Saturday, while Wentworth faces Maine-Fort Kent and Maine-Machias on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Those games will be played at Maine Maritime Academy.
