BOSTON, Mass. – Senior forward Emily Cring (Cicero, N.Y.) scored 16 points on 8-for-11 shooting, while sophomore guard Jessie Coffey (Wakefield, R.I.) and senior guard Whitney Alvarez (Jaffrey, N.H.) each chipped in with 11 on a combined 9-for-13 shooting as the Wentworth women’s basketball team (2-1) downed MIT (2-1) in a non-league game played at Tansey Gymnasium.
MIT took a 2-0 lead to start the game, but a quick 9-0 run by the Leopards would give them the lead for good. Wentworth would increase its lead to 22 at the half by shooting 55.9 percent from the floor and holding the Engineers to 33.3 percent. Cring led all scorers with 10 points in the first half.
The second half would see more of the same, as the hosts held MIT to 5-for-25 (20.0 percent) shooting from the floor, while shooting nearly 54 percent to increase their lead to as much as 33. Eleven of the 12 Leopard players would score at least one point.
Sophomore guard Michelle Fauci (Boxford, Mass.) scored eight points and dished out seven assists, while freshman forward Kirsten Vallone (Avon, N.Y.) added eight and a game-high nine rebounds. Wentworth outrebounded MIT, 45-21.
The Engineers were led by junior guard Clara Yuan (San Jose, Calif.) who scored 16 points and graduate student Samia Mahjub (Barrington, Ill.) who added 13 points and a pair of steals.
