BOSTON, Mass. – Junior forward Weonard Bynes (Bridgeport, Conn.) connected on 8-of-10 shots from the floor en route to a team-high 21 points, leading five players in double digits, as the Wentworth men’s basketball team closed out the regular season with a 94-74 win over New England College in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played at Tansey Gymnasium.
The Leopards opened the game on a 15-3 run, thanks in part to six points from Bynes and four points from junior guard Brad Bryant (Livermore, Maine). However, the Pilgrims would counter with a 12-2 run of their own over the next three minutes and trailed, 17-15. During NEC’s run, senior guard Ryan Jaziri (Norwich, Conn.) had four points.
Wentworth would up its lead to eight as Bynes hit two free throws, senior forward Gil Ward (Mystic, Conn.) hit a jumper, and senior guard Ed Bolton (Silver Spring, Md.) had a basket of his own. The Pilgrims came right back and would trim the lead to three with 9:00 remaining in the half, but the Leopards would take a 10-point lead (33-23) with 6:23 left on a pair of free throws from sophomore forward Shane West (Saco, Maine).
Jaziri would score NEC’s next five points and cut the lead to 33-28, but a Bolton three pointer pushed the lead back to eight. Freshman guard Bridell Thomas (Hamden, Conn.) and classmate Patrick Holung (Hartford, Conn.) cut the lead to four, before a basket from junior guard Todd Doyle (Mystic, Conn.) gave Wentworth a 38-32 lead with 4:16 to play. A Jaziri three cut the lead to 38-35, but Wentworth outscored the Pilgrims 11-4 over the final four minutes of the half to take a 49-39 lead at the break.
Using an 18-6 run over the first 7:29 of the second half, Wentworth broke the game open and extended its lead to 22 as Prezzie-Blue and West had six and four points, respectively.
New England College, which had shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half, shot just 37.9 percent in the second half and was outrebounded 46-29. The Pilgrims also committed 19 turnovers, which led to 31 Leopard points.
Doyle and Prezzie-Blue each finished the day with 14 points, with Prezzie-Blue dishing out six assists. West turned in a solid performance, scoring 11 points, hauling down 10 rebounds, and dishing out seven assists. Playing in is final game, Jaziri led all scorers with 29 points.
With the win, Wentworth improves to 14-10 overall and finishes tied for sixth in TCCC play at 8-5. Holding the tie-breaker over Colby-Sawyer, the Leopards will travel to third-seeded Gordon Tuesday night for a 7:00 p.m. quarterfinal round contest against the Fighting Scots. New England College sees its season come to a close with a 7-18 (2-11) record.
