Colby-Sawyer vs Wentworth (02/20/08 at Boston, Mass. (Tansey Gymnasium))

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior guard Todd Doyle’s (Mystic, Conn.) three pointer with 2:25 remaining snapped a 58-all tie and enabled the Wentworth men’s basketball team (13-10, 7-5 The Commonwealth Coast Conference) to win for the first time in the last 18 meetings against Colby-Sawyer (12-10, 7-5) by defeating the Chargers, 71-63.

Colby-Sawyer took control early, leading 10-5 with 14:15 left in the half as junior forward Andrew Cousins (South Portland, Maine) scored six of his team’s first 10 points.  However, an 8-0 run by the hosts gave Wentworth a 13-10 lead.  Senior guard Sherrad Prezzie-Blue (Norwalk, Conn.) hit a basket to pull within three, while Doyle converted a three-point play with 12:53 left to knot the game at 10-all.  After a turnover, Doyle was fouled in the act of taking a three pointer and hit all three shots, giving Wentworth a 13-10 lead.

Trailing by four with 9:44 left, Cousins and sophomore guard David Rosso (Wilmington, Vt.) hit back-to-back baskets to knot the game at 16.  A layup by junior forward Weonard Bynes (Bridgeport, Conn.) gave the Leopards a two-point advantage, but Cousins immediately answered with a three to give the Chargers a 19-18 lead with 7:19 left in the half.

Bynes would hit two free throws to re-gain the lead and a Doyle basket gave the Leopards a 22-19 lead with just over 6:00 left.  Colby-Sawyer quickly responded with a three pointer from sophomore guard Jon Chaloux (Barre, Vt.) to tie the game and a three-point play by junior forward Ryan Murray (Killingworth, Conn.) gave the Chargers a 25-22 lead with 5:06 left.

Colby-Sawyer would continue to lead and was up by three with 2:08 left before Leopard senior guard Ed Bolton (Silver Spring, Md.) hit a three pointer to tie the game for the fifth time of the half at 31-all.  Murray followed with a layup to give the Chargers a two-point lead, but the Leopards scored the final five points of the half to take a 36-33 lead at the break.

After Rosso opened the second half with a basket that cut the lead to one, Doyle scored Wentworth’s next six points and gave Wentworth a 42-37 lead 1:14 into the second stanza.  Cousins buried a three and junior guard Matt Lemieux (Manchester, N.H.) followed with a basket of his own to tie the game at 42-all before junior forward Duncan Szeliga (Newmarket, N.H.) hit two free throws, putting Colby-Sawyer on top by a pair (44-42) with 14:26 left,

On the next possession Doyle hit a three pointer which ignited a 12-2 run and gave the hosts a 54-46 lead with 9:34 left.  During the run Prezzie-Blue accounted for five of Wentworth’s points, including a three-point play that capped the lead at eight.

The Chargers would not go away quietly and scored the next four points to cut the lead to 54-50.  After Bynes hit two free throws and a jump shot to extend the lead back to eight, Colby-Sawyer went on an 8-0 run, including four points coming from sophomore guard Andrew Ferreira (New London, N.H.), and tied the game on a fast break layup from Chaloux with 2:41 left.

With 2:25 to play, Prezzie-Blue found an open Doyle, who would give Wentworth the lead for good at 61-58.  Chaloux would hit one of two free throws to trim the lead to 61-59 with 1:45 left, but Doyle found Prezzie-Blue at the top of the Key for an open three to give Wentworth a 64-59 lead with 1:12 left.

Ferreira hit one of two free throws with 1:03 left, cutting the lead to 64-60, but a fastbreak layup from Bynes pushed the lead back to six and Doyle hit two free throws to give the Leopards a 68-60 lead with 36 ticks left.  The Chargers would miss a three point attempt on their next possession and junior guard Brad Bryant (Livermore, Maine) hit one of two from the charity stripe to give Wentworth a 69-60 lead.  Rosso hit a three pointer on the next possession to cut the lead to six, but two free throws from Bynes with eight seconds left sealed the win.

Doyle finished the game with 24 points on 6-for-13 shooting from the floor and a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line.  Bynes scored 17 points on 5-for-7 shooting to go along with nine rebounds and two blocks, while Prezzie-Blue was 7-for-13 from the floor, en route to a 16-point, three-assist night.

Cousins was 6-for-7 from the floor—including 3-for-3 from behind the arc—to lead Colby-Sawyer with 16 points.  Rosso added 15 of his own in a losing effort.

Prior to the win tonight, the last time Wentworth had beaten Colby-Sawyer was on Feb. 27, 1997, as the Leopards took a 78-60 victory in New London, N.H., in the semifinals of the CCC Tournament and would go on to win their first conference championship two nights later.

Both teams, as well as Endicott, stand tied for sixth in TCCC standings with identical 7-5 records.  Colby-Sawyer closes out the regular season by hosting Western New England Saturday at 1:00, while that same day Wentworth hosts New England College.  Endicott will also be in action that day, traveling to Curry.
