BOSTON, Mass. – Junior guard Todd Doyle (Mystic, Conn.)connected on 8-of-16 shots to score a game-high 20 points and the Wentworth defense held Fisher to just 26.8 percent shooting from the floor as the Leopards kicked off the 2008 calendar year with a 79-46 win over the Falcons in a non-league contest played at Tansey Gymnasium.
Fisher would take an early 6-2 lead, which was quickly erased when Doyle hit a jumper and senior guard Sherrad Prezzie-Blue (Norwalk, Conn.) buried a three pointer to give Wentworth a 7-6 lead 3:29 into the contest. However, the Falcons would use a 9-4 run over the next 3:45 to take a six-point lead (15-9).
The Leopards would then take over, outscoring the guests by a 19-5 margin over the next seven minutes to take a 28-18 lead. During the run, sophomore forward Shane West (Saco, Maine) had six points, while classmate Matt Abbott (Falmouth, Mass.) chipped in with four of his own. Fisher would cut the lead to 28-22 with 5:08 left, with three points coming from junior guard Stephen Rice (Roxbury, Mass.), but Wentworth closed out the half with a 17-4 run, with Doyle connecting on three three-pointers, and led 45-26 at the break.
The second half proved to be more of the same for the hosts, as Wentworth’s lead grew to as much as 33, thanks to nearly 55 percent shooting from the floor and forcing 17 turnovers, which would lead to 13 points. The Leopards would shoot 45.5 percent from the floor and forced 27 turnovers on the night.
In addition to Doyle’s 20 points, Prezzie-Blue added 13 points and three assists, while West had eight points (on 4-for-5 shooting) and eight rebounds and junior forward Weonard Bynes (Bridgeport, Conn.) added eight of his own and hauled down five caroms. Junior guard Brad Bryant dished out nine assists.
Fisher was led by Rice, who scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while freshman guard Louis Williams (Burlington, Vt.), the Falcons’ leading scorer, was held to 10 points.
With the win, Wentworth improves to 6-4 and opens play in The Commonwealth Coast Conference on Saturday afternoon at Gordon. That same day Fisher (3-12) heads to Maine-Fort Kent for a Sunrise Conference game.
