NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior guard Al Sowers (Monrovia, Md.) knocked down a three-pointer with 35 seconds left giving Coast Guard a 73-72 lead and the Bears held on to win its seventh straight and remain unbeaten with a thrilling 74-72 win over Wentworth in a non-conference game.
Senior forward Jeff Prebeck (Columbus, Ind.), who got an offensive rebound which led to the Sowers game winner, made one of two free throws with five seconds left to put the Bears up 74-72. The Leopards (4-2) would have a chance to win the game, but could not get a shot off before the final buzzer sounded.
Wentworth, which saw its four-game win streak come to an end, led by as many as five in the second half, 53-48 with 11:33 left before Coast Guard used a 12-0 run to take a 60-53 lead with 8:30 left
Coast Guard junior forward Craig Johnson’s (Medford, Ore.) basket put the Bears up 70-66 with 2:56 left before senior guard Sherrad Prezzie-Blue (Norwalk, Conn.) hit a three pointer that made the score 70-69 with 2:41 left. Prezzie-Blue accounted for 12 straight Leopard points in the final five minutes on four three-pointers, the final one gave the Leopards a 72-70 lead with 1:34 left. After being held to just two points in the first half, he finished with a team-high 21 points as he hit on five-of-eight from three-point range in the second half.
Prezzie-Blue hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut a 68-60 deficit to 68-66 with 3:25 left. Johnson’s basket put the Bears up 70-66 with 2:56 left before Prezzie-Blue’s three made the score 70-69 with 2:41 left.
Coast Guard (7-0) led by as many as ten in the first half at 27-17 with 8:09 left in the first half before the Leopards used a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to 29-27 with 6:04 left. The Bears led 38-35 at halftime.
Senior guard Grant Johnson (Grayson, Ga.) led Coast Guard with 17 points, Johnson had 16 points and Prebeck finished with 15 points and a season-high 13 rebounds.
In addition to Prezzie-Blue, junior guard Brad Bryant (Livemore, Maine) finished with 13 points while senior guard Ed Bolton (Silver Spring, Md.) added 11 points for Wentworth. Freshman forward Shane West (Saco, Maine) led the Leopards with nine rebounds.
