PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – Sophomore Doug Papuga (Branford, Conn.) scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th inning and would strand the tying run in scoring position in the home half of the inning as Wentworth completed a three-game sweep of Defiance, 3-2, in innings.
In a game where both teams had opportunities to score first, it was the Yellow Jackets who nearly drew first blood in the home half of the first inning. Sophomore Trey Harris (Toledo, Ohio) reached on a fielding error with one out and stole second. He was moved to third when sophomore Tim Pitro (Gahanna, Ohio) grounded out to first, but would be stranded there after a strikeout ended the inning. In the second inning Defiance appeared to place a runner in scoring position with two outs when sophomore Keith Wade (Wixom, Mich.) struck a double to right center. However, the hit was erased when an appeal play ruled that he had not touched first on his way to second.
The Leopards had their first opportunity to score in the top of the third as freshman Jake McManus (Hopkinton, N.H.) led off with a single through the left side. He was erased from the base path when sophomore Pete Oggeri (Sandy Hook, Conn.) hit into a fielder’s choice. Oggeri moved to second on a passed ball and advanced 90 feet further on a groundout by junior Mike Roberts (Chelmsford, Mass.), but was stranded there when a groundout ended the inning.
Wentworth added another chance two innings later as senior Jarrett Ament (Boylston, Mass.) led off with a walk and went to second on McManus’ second single of the day. Both advanced on a passed ball, and with one out, the Leopards attempted to manufacture a run via a squeeze bunt. However, the attempt was not successful, as Ament was out at the plate. McManus was left at third when a groundout ended the threat.
In the home half of the inning, Defiance had its chance to break the stalemate when sophomore Casey Kashen (Temperance, Mich.) reached on a one-out error and advanced to second on a groundout. Freshman Braden Brugler (Port Clinton, Ohio) laced a two-out single to right, where Papuga would fire a strike to Oggeri to get Kashen at the plate to end the inning. Brugler’s single broke up a no-hitter by Leopard starter Mo Gardner (Chagrin Falls, Ohio).
The Leopards finally drew first blood in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Anthony Carbone (Goshen, Conn.) led off the inning being hit by a pitch and would move to second when sophomore Phil Costello (Medford, Mass.) walked. Carbone stole third and Costello would be put in scoring position when freshman Ben Danker (Branford, Conn.) drew Wentworth’s second walk of the inning. After a strikeout, sophomore Chris Carbone (Goshen, Conn.) reached on an error, which would plate his brother and move the other two runners up 90 feet. That would be the lone run the Leopards would get, as Yellow Jacket sophomore starter Matthew Wilson (Pickerington, Ohio) induced an inning-ending double play.
Defiance took a 2-1 lead in the home half of the seventh, with the tying run coming on a bizarre play. Pitro led off with a single and advanced to second when junior Aaron Stewart (Toledo, Ohio) walked. Both moved into scoring position when senior David Jackson (Blanchester, Ohio) ground out to the right side. After a fly out, Gardner began to intentionally walk Wade, but was called for a balk with a 2-0 count, which would score Stewart and move Stewart to third. After Wade was walked, he stole second, which was followed by Brugler reaching on an error that scored Stewart and moved Wade to third. A strikeout ensued, ending the inning, and Defiance’s chance to add to its lead.
The Yellow Jackets got back-to-back strikeouts to open the top of the eighth inning, but would not retire Wentworth in order, as Danker would reach on an error. Papuga followed with a double, moving Danker to third. A Chris Carbone walk loaded the bases and Stewart was brought in from first to relieve freshman Matt Kaighan (Toledo, Ohio), who had come on to start the seventh. The first batter he faced, junior Nick Cunningham (Pembroke, Mass.), a pinch hitter, reached on an error, which would plate Danker with the tying run, but the inning ended when Papuga tried to score from second on the play.
Gardner set Defiance down in order in the eighth and ninth, with Stewart doing the same to the Leopards in the ninth and 10th. Papuga relieved Gardner to start the 10th and retired the first batter he faced, before giving up a one-out single to Brugler. After a strikeout, sophomore Kirk Jesse (Ney, Ohio) hit an infield single placing runners on first and second. The inning would end with the second batter Papuga would set down on strikes.
Papuga opened the 11th by doubling down the left field line. He moved to third when Chris Carbone grounded out to the right side and would score the go-ahead run when freshman Mike Diodato (Asbury, N.J.) hit a ground ball in the infield and the throw to the plate was not in time. Diodato moved to second when McManus grounded out to first, but a groundout ended the inning.
Down to its last at bat, Pitro was hit by a pitch to lead off the Defiance 11th. Stewart would move him to second with a sacrifice bunt, but he would be stranded there as Papuga closed the door with a ground out and a strikeout.
Papuga picks up the win (1-0), allowing two hits in two innings of work. He struck out three batters; all on called third strikes. He followed up a solid performance by Gardner, who allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits. He walked three and struck out six. Offensively, Papuga had a pair of doubles, while McManus had a pair of singles.
Stewart gets tagged with the loss (0-1), allowing one run on one hit in 3.1 innings of work. He struck out five batters. Wilson lasted six innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits. He walked four and struck out six batters. Kaighan allowed an unearned run on one hit, walking one, and striking out two in 1.2 innings. Offensively for the Yellow Jackets, Brugler had a pair of hits.
Wentworth has now won three games in a row and improves to 3-2 on the season. The Leopards are back in action on Thursday morning against Olivet College. Defiance slips to 0-3 to open the season and plays Olivet tomorrow (March 12) in a doubleheader.
