Assignment 4
Assignment:
We are in the process of reading and discussing essays
that have to do with Law and order, a pertinent subject right now
on the national and civil level. Consider the ideas we have been
reading about concerning freedom of speech. Work with "The
Declaration of Independence," "Protecting Freedom of Expression on
Campus, and "The Internet, the Internet: The Next Front in the
Book Wars,"" and the First Amendment to the Constitution." Do
not synopsize these pieces, but draw from their ideas. Write an
essay addressing the following question: Is it appropriate, for an
orderly society, to restrict access to some information?
Procedure:
Reread the essays. Know their ideas, their points.
In a first draft, start off with the question. What is your initial
answer? Yes? No? Why? That is the beginning
of the writing process. What examples can you give?
Think of things personal, visual, something your reader can share
beyond vague general statements about right or wrong. There
will be a strong tendency toward generality. That's fine in a
first draft. For a short paper like this, though, you need to
sift through that draft and find a single approach to your answer to
the question. In the next draft, concentrate on that approach.
Be direct, clear. Remember, your task here is to convincingly
offer an answer to the question, not the answer.
