BOSTON, Mass. – Senior midfielder Joe Marcel (Levittown, N.Y.) scored three goals, including the eventual game-winning tally with 6:28 left in the first half as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men’s lacrosse team held on for a 5-3 win over New England College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference tilt at Sweeney Field.
One minute and 14 seconds into the contest, freshman attackman Zak Smola (Newington, Conn.) got the Leopards on the board, scoring an extra-man goal on a feed from senior attackman Russ Peterson (Bennington, Vt.). With 12:04 left in the period, the Pilgrims evened the score with an unassisted tally from freshman attackman Cory Love (Rochester, N.Y.). Marcel would score his first of the game with 9:11 left in the period on a pass from sophomore midfielder Nick Lambros (Forestdale, Mass.), while Peterson rounded out the first period scoring with an extra-man goal coming with 6:18 left.
Marcel’s unassisted goal with 6:28 left in the second gave Wentworth a 4-1 lead before New England College sophomore attackman Dan Foster (Wiscasset, Maine) pulled the Pilgrims back within a pair.
A sloppy third period by both teams saw no scoring, but the Leopards holding a 7-5 shot advantage. The scoreless play would continue until NEC sophomore midfielder Kyle Burke (Winnetka, Ill.) ended the scoring drought and brought his team to within one with 4:02 left. However, the Leopards responded with a Marcel goal 38 seconds later.
The Pilgrims would have a two-man advantage with 2:14 left, but Wentworth was able to kill off the man-down situation – something the Leopards did 10 out of 10 times on the evening – and control the ball in the offensive end.
New England College would get the ball back late and had a clean scoring opportunity, but senior goalie Rich Hamaty (Hingham, Mass.) made a key save, which essentially killed the Pilgrims’ chance to pull within one.
NEC won seven of 11 face-offs, with senior midfielder Neil Gundry (Calgary, Alberta) going 7-4. Junior Tim Lunt (Salem, Mass.) was 4-4 for Wentworth.
Hamaty made nine saves on the game, including four in the final stanza. Senior Matt Cotter (Sandwich, Mass.) made 17 saves for the Pilgrims, while sophomore Billy Brooks (Lewiston, Maine) made one save while Cotter was serving a penalty. Wentworth held a 31-21 shot advantage and a 32-28 advantage in ground balls.
