BOSTON, Mass. – Senior attackman Ryan McGovern (Marston, Mills, Mass.) scored four goals and added and assist, while classmate Joe Marcel (Levittown, N.Y.) chipped in with three goals and one assist as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men’s lacrosse team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 17-7 win over Roger Williams (5-5-1, 3-3 CCC).
The Leopards took command early, scoring a pair of goals within the first 2:02 of the contest. McGovern got things rolling with 13:31 left in the period, followed by a tally from freshman midfielder Chris Wesche (Holden, Mass.) 33 seconds later. Wentworth could close out the first period with a 4-0 lead after freshman midfielder Craig Correia (New Bedford, Mass.) and McGovern netted goals.
McGovern got his third of the game 13 seconds into the second quarter, followed by a sophomore midfielder Nick Lambros (Forestdale, Mass.) man-up goal with 6:33 remaining. The Hawks got on the board 49 seconds later when freshman midfielder Geoff Tucker (North Jupiter, Fla.) scored a shorthanded goal. Marcel would round out the first half scoring with a shorthanded tally of his own with 1:38 left in the half, giving Wentworth a commanding 7-1 lead.
Senior attackman Russ Peterson (Bennington, Vt.) scored on a feed from Marcel to get the second half started, before freshman midfielder Steve Iwonicki (East Lyme, Conn.) and Marcel pushed the lead to nine (10-1) with 3:59 left in the third. Roger Williams would get a goal from freshman midfielder Joe Healy (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) with 2:30 left in the period before McGovern and Correia scored within 56 seconds of each other to boost the lead to 12-2 after 45:00 of play.
The final period was a scoring frenzy, with each team scoring five times. Freshman attackman Zak Smola (Newington, Conn.), who would also have three assists on the day, as well as Marcel, and senior defender Nate Vose (Ithaca, N.Y.) highlighted the scoring for Wentworth, while freshman attackman Dom Celeste (Jupiter, Fla.) scored two of the Hawks’ final quarter goals.
Roger Williams won 20 of 27 face-offs, including 16 from freshman midfielder Dave Siegel (Jupiter, Fla.). Junior midfielder Tim Lunt (Salem, Mass.) won four of the seven draws the Leopards won. Wentworth’s man-down defense, which came into the game killing off 89.5 percent of its shorthanded situations, allowed two extra-man goals in 11 opportunities.
Sophomore Nick Murphy (Cohasset, Mass.) earned his third victory (3-2) for the Leopards, making 19 saves. Sophomore Bobby Hensley (Simsbury, Conn.) took the loss for the Hawks, making 17 saves and allowing 12 goals in 45:00 of work. Junior Matt Lanen (Needham, Mass.) made six saves and allowed five goals in the final quarter.
Wentworth hosts New England College Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. Roger Williams is back in action on Wednesday afternoon, as the Hawks travel to Williams College for a non-league contest.
