BOSTON, Massachusetts – Senior attackman Brennan Sherry (Wayland, Mass.) and junior attackman Tyler Sorba (San Anaelmo, Calif.) each tallied three times, including netting insurance goals each in the fourth period as MIT improved to 2-0 with a 9-4 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a non-league contest played at Sweeney Field.
The Leopards’ season would get off to a rough start as the Engineers would score four times in the first period and keep their hosts off the board for the first 23:19 of the game. Freshman midfielder Patrick Shannon (Andover, Mass.) got things started with 9:59 left in the first stanza. Senior midfielder Scott Purchase (Locust Valley, N.Y.) would give MIT a 2-0 lead with 8:31 to play in the period. Sherry would tally the next two goals – both assisted by junior attackman Jonathan Stolmeier (San Antonio, Texas) – with 5:23 and 3:59 to play, respectively.
Wentworth would finally get on the board with 6:41 left in the second period when senior defender Nate Vose (Ithaca, N.Y.) caused a turnover off a scoring chance and made an rush into the attack zone, where he fed classmate Russ Peterson (Bennington, Vt.). The Engineers countered with one of their own when Sorba netted his second of the game 1:59 later to give MIT a 5-1 lead.
Wentworth opened the third period by scoring a pair of goals in a 42-second span. Freshman midfielder Chris Wesche (Holden, Mass.) scored his first career goal from Peterson with 12:44 left in the third, which was followed by a junior attakman Adam Keniston (Plainville, Mass.) tally, from freshman midfielder Craig Correia ( New Bedford, Mass.), with 12:02 left to trim the lead to 5-3. After Sorba scored his second of the game with 10:52 left, the Leopards would get back with two when senior midfielder Joe Marcel (Levittown, N.Y.) scored midway through the period.
With the Leopards trailing, 6-4, entering the final 15 minutes of play, MIT scored the first of its three fourth quarter goals 1:57 into the period as Sherry netted his third of the game. Sorba’s third of the game, with 4:05 left, upped the lead to 8-4, while Stolmeier closed out the scoring 28 seconds later.
Despite being out shot by a 40-22 margin (including 23-5 in the first half), the Leopards won 12-of-17 face-offs, including junior midfielder Tim Lunt (Salem, Mass.) winning six draws. Lunt and classmate Paul Ridge (Baltimore, Md.) each picked up 10 ground balls to help Wentworth hold a 49-31 advantage in that category.
Junior goalie Zach Brewer (Durham, N.C.) made 15 saves, including eight in the third period, for the Engineers. Leopard senior Rich Hamaty (Hingham, Mass.) made 17 saves in the loss.
